Rooms that still work on a wet Tuesday in February.

Hulver Studio designs colour and material schemes, and complete rooms, for houses and flats across London. Two of us, about a dozen projects a year.

First visit £180, two hours — credited against a project.

What it costs, and what you get for it.

Three ways to work with the studio. Every fee below is for our design work — the building, decorating and furniture are yours to spend, and we give you a range for those at the first visit.

Consultation visit

One room, one visit, honest answers.

We come to the room, look at it at the hour you actually use it, and talk through what it needs. You get a written summary of the directions worth pursuing within five working days — colours, materials, and what we would not spend money on.

£180
fixed, for a two-hour visit

Good if you want a second opinion before you commit to anything.

Colour & material scheme

Everything specified, nothing built.

A full scheme for the room: dominant, supporting and accent colours specified to the paint reference and finish, with floors, stone, joinery, metal and textile pulled into one story. Proofed on your walls before a tin is opened. You order from the schedule yourself.

from £1,400
per room

Good if the room works and only looks wrong.

Full room design

Drawings your trades can price and build from.

The scheme, plus layout, lighting and built-in joinery drawn properly — a set a builder and a cabinetmaker can quote against without ringing you every other day. We visit site through the build and handle the snag list at the end.

from £4,800
per room

Good if walls are moving or anything is being made.

A room takes between six weeks and five months.

Which end depends on whether anything is being built. This is the order it happens in either way.

Week one

We come and look

A visit to the room at the hour you use it. We measure, photograph, and ask what you already own that has to stay.

Weeks two to four

The scheme is drawn

Colour, material and layout worked up together, then shown to you once as a whole rather than dripped out in pieces.

Week five

Proofed on your walls

Paint goes up on the actual wall over the actual primer, and samples sit in the room for a week. One full revision is included here.

From week six

Ordered, or built

You order from the schedule, or we run the build with your trades and hand over a snag list at the end.

What you actually receive.

A scheme is a set of documents, not a mood board. Everything here is yours to keep and to hand to whoever does the work.

  • A scheme board with the real materials on it — paint, stone, timber, textile
  • A paint schedule: colour, reference, finish and coat count, surface by surface
  • A furniture and lighting schedule with prices, lead times and where to order
  • Layout drawings at 1:50, and joinery drawings a cabinetmaker can price
  • A box of samples, labelled, so you can check a decision a year later

Questions we are asked on the phone.

How much should I budget beyond your fee?

For a scheme-only room, decoration and soft furnishings usually land between £180 and £400 per square metre. A full room design with joinery is rarely under £1,200 per square metre. We give you a range at the first visit, before you commit.

Do I have to buy everything through you?

No. Where we buy on your behalf you get the trade discount passed on; otherwise you order from the schedule yourself, at your own pace.

Can you work with furniture we already own?

Yes, and it usually makes the room better. Every project starts with a list of what stays — the Tarn Cottage rooms were almost entirely furniture the family already had.

What if we do not like the scheme?

One full revision is included, and the proofing week exists so you see the colour on your own wall before anything is ordered. It rarely gets as far as a revision.

Do you work outside London?

Within about two hours of the studio. Beyond the M25 travel is charged at cost and we group visits so there are fewer of them.
