The room faces a brick wall four metres away and never gets direct sun. Fighting that with white paint had left it looking grey and cold, which is how the owners had lived in it for three years.

We went the other way: a deep blue-green over walls, cornice and the back of the door, wardrobes built flush into the chimney breast, a dressing corner at the window, and two opal globes hung low either side of the bed so the light is at reading height rather than overhead.

What the client was handed

  • Layout and joinery drawings the cabinetmaker priced from
  • Lighting plan with switching, on three circuits
  • Paint schedule — colour, finish and coat count per surface
  • Furniture and textile schedule with prices and lead times
Corner of the bedroom with an upholstered chair, a small writing table and a folded robe
The dressing corner, by the only window that gets any morning light.
Guest room with a textured plaster wall, timber ceiling and layered bedding
The guest room next door, done at the same time in the same palette, warmer end first.

Panelling, a cold north light, and one colour that had to hold up under lamps as well as daylight.
